A heating check should answer a few concrete questions: Is the equipment receiving fuel and power? Is heat moving through the house? Are combustion products venting outdoors? Is water staying inside a hydronic system? The answer is different for a furnace, steam boiler, hot-water boiler, and condensing combi unit.
Checks you can make without opening the equipment
- Confirm the thermostat is calling for heat and has working batteries if required.
- Check the electrical service switch and breaker once; do not repeatedly reset a trip.
- For a forced-air system, inspect the filter and make sure supply and return grilles are open.
- For a boiler, look for water on the floor, active relief discharge, or a new gauge change.
- Keep outdoor intake and exhaust terminals clear of snow, leaves, and stored items.
- Listen for a new banging, grinding, or rapid on-and-off cycle and note when it occurs.
Do not remove burner covers, bypass a control, add water to an unfamiliar boiler, or keep resetting a safety switch. Those actions can hide the condition that caused the shutdown.
What professional service should examine
The work depends on the appliance and manufacturer instructions. A service visit may include checking safeties, burners, flame signal, venting, condensate disposal, pumps, valves, pressure, and temperature. Combustion equipment may also require instrumented testing. A checklist copied from a different model is not a substitute for the manual.

Uneven heat needs its own set of observations
A house can be warm overall while one floor, room, or zone is not. For forced air, note whether the issue follows one supply register, several rooms on a branch, or an entire zone. For hydronic heat, identify the thermostat, baseboard or radiator, and piping loop involved. Steam complaints should include which radiators heat, whether vents hiss or spit, and whether the problem changes during a long cycle.
Do not close most registers, alter balancing valves at random, or raise boiler pressure to force heat into a cold area. Those changes can create noise, airflow, temperature, or safety problems and erase the original pattern. A room-by-room note made during one complete heat call is more useful than changing several controls at once.
When to stop and call for help
- A carbon-monoxide alarm sounds.
- You smell gas or see signs of combustion damage.
- Water is discharging from a boiler relief valve.
- A breaker, rollout switch, or other safety keeps tripping.
- A vent is loose, blocked, rusted through, or disconnected.
- The home is losing heat in weather that could freeze plumbing.
For a gas odor, leave the building and call 911 from outside. For a carbon-monoxide alarm, move outside to fresh air and contact emergency services. Do not re-enter until responders say it is safe.
Repair, maintenance, and replacement are different decisions
Maintenance addresses inspection and model-specific service items. Repair corrects a diagnosed failure. Replacement becomes a separate discussion when the heat exchanger or boiler block is compromised, critical parts are unavailable, or repeated repairs no longer make economic sense. Age alone does not settle that decision.
A replacement comparison should use the building's heat loss and distribution requirements, not merely the capacity of the old nameplate. The written scope should identify venting, controls, pumps or duct changes, electrical work, condensate, permits, startup tests, and responsibility for removing the old equipment. That lets homeowners compare complete projects instead of equipment prices with different exclusions.

Keep a useful service record
Record the equipment model, serial number, fuel, service date, fault code, parts replaced, and test results. A clear history helps the next technician distinguish a recurring condition from a new one and gives you better information when comparing repair with replacement.
