Three-valve bypass
A service path around the treatment equipment.
The inlet and outlet valves allow the treatment equipment to be isolated for service. A third valve connects the incoming and outgoing lines to provide a path around it. Water using that path skips the treatment stages; the bypass does not treat water.
What we evaluate.We confirm which equipment the bypass isolates and how untreated water will be managed during service.

Sediment filter
A replaceable cartridge catches suspended particles.
Water passes through a cartridge selected for the particle concern and required flow. It can reduce particles such as sand and rust within its rating. A sediment cartridge does not soften water or establish that the water is safe to drink.
What we evaluate.Particle size, pressure loss and water use help determine the cartridge and its replacement schedule.

Acid neutralizer
Mineral media raises the pH of acidic well water.
When testing confirms low pH, an appropriate neutralizing medium can dissolve into the water to raise it. Calcite-based media also adds hardness, which can influence the softener design downstream. Media choice and replenishment depend on the water and equipment.
What we evaluate.We evaluate pH, related water chemistry and flow, then check treated-water results. Low pH alone does not prove the cause of a plumbing leak.

Salt softener + brine tank
Resin removes well-water hardness; brine regenerates it.
The resin tank exchanges calcium and magnesium for sodium ions. The separate salt, or brine, tank supplies the solution used to regenerate that resin. This stage addresses hardness; it is not a general treatment for every chemical or microorganism.
What we evaluate.Measured hardness after pretreatment, household demand, peak flow, drain access and salt upkeep shape the selection and settings.

UV treatment
UV light targets microorganisms as water passes through.
A lamp inside a protective quartz sleeve exposes flowing water to ultraviolet light. Appropriate equipment can inactivate susceptible microorganisms when water quality, UV exposure and flow meet its requirements. UV does not remove hardness, sediment or dissolved chemicals.
What we evaluate.Laboratory results, pretreatment, rated flow, power, lamp and sleeve care, and follow-up sampling all matter.

Match well-water symptoms to the right evaluation.
Hard-water treatment and acidic well water treatment solve different problems. Start with what you see, then use measurements to decide which stage may fit. Symptoms are clues, not a water test.
Hard well water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium. These minerals can leave white buildup on faucets and showerheads and make soap harder to lather.
What to check
Measure hardness in the untreated water and after any neutralizer. Check deposits and existing equipment before attributing every mark to hardness.
Treatment that may fit
A salt-based water softener can reduce measured hardness. A sediment filter catches particles but does not remove dissolved hardness minerals.
Blue-green stains on sinks can come from copper corrosion. Acidic well water may contribute, but stain color alone does not establish low pH or the cause of a leak.
What to check
Test pH and related corrosion chemistry. Ask the laboratory about appropriate copper and lead sampling when plumbing corrosion is a concern.
Treatment that may fit
An acid neutralizer may fit confirmed low pH. Media, flow and incoming hardness affect that choice; existing plumbing damage needs a separate evaluation.
Visible particles may be sediment, silt or oxidized metals. Cloudiness has several possible causes, so appearance alone cannot tell you which filter to buy.
What to check
Investigate where particles enter the supply and evaluate turbidity, particle size and flow. A recurring problem may also need well or plumbing work.
Treatment that may fit
A correctly rated sediment filter for well water can capture suspended particles. Dissolved metals and other contaminants require their own evaluation.
Water can look and taste normal while containing contaminants. A lack of staining or odor does not establish that private-well water is safe to drink.
What to check
Use a certified laboratory and follow private-well testing guidance from MassDEP and your local Board of Health.
Treatment that may fit
UV disinfection may be part of the response to a microbial concern. It must suit the water and flow; investigate the contamination source and verify results too.
Why use an acid neutralizer and a water softener together?
How to raise pH in well water
pH describes acidity; hardness measures calcium and magnesium. A well can need attention to both. In a suitable calcite water neutralizer, mineral media dissolves into acidic water to raise its pH. The media and tank must fit the measured water chemistry and flow. Very different water results can call for a different approach.
Why the neutralizer comes before the softener here
Where calcite is used, it adds calcium as it works. The downstream salt softener is selected for the hardness reaching it, including any hardness added by neutralization. Its resin tank treats that hardness; the separate brine tank supplies regeneration solution. We check treated pH and hardness to confirm both stages are doing their jobs.
Normal treatment path: three-valve bypass assembly → sediment filter → acid neutralizer → salt softener → UV light. With the treatment isolated, the bypass path routes water around the treatment equipment for service.
UV is last in this example so it receives pretreated water. Particle removal and control of mineral fouling help it operate within its water-quality requirements. UV addresses susceptible microorganisms; it does not remove hardness or dissolved chemicals.See VIQUA’s pretreatment guidance.

What causes low pH in well water?
Dissolved carbon dioxide and other acidic constituents can lower groundwater pH. The result depends on the water chemistry, so testing your own well matters more than assuming a neighbor's system will fit. Low pH and hardness are separate measurements; check both before choosing treatment.
A conventional salt-based softener treats calcium and magnesium hardness; it is not designed to correct low pH. Low pH well water treatment needs a separate evaluation. An acid neutralizer and a water softener can be used together when the test results support both.
Calcite media adds calcium as it dissolves, so it can increase hardness. In the illustrated arrangement, a softener after the neutralizer can address hardness added by calcium-based media. A neutralizer is not a substitute for softening, and the media must fit the incoming water chemistry.
Why put a sediment filter before a water softener?
A sediment prefilter captures particles before they reach downstream treatment. The cartridge rating and housing must suit the particle problem and flow. An undersized or clogged filter can restrict flow, so filter condition is part of evaluating reduced pressure through a treatment system.
That decision follows microbial testing and evaluation of the well. A UV system needs suitable pretreatment, power and flow within its rating. Particles can interfere with UV exposure, and mineral deposits can foul the quartz sleeve. UV does not soften water or remove dissolved chemical contaminants.
What should I test before choosing well-water treatment?
For this type of system, start with separate pH and hardness measurements, then evaluate related chemistry, particles and household flow. A certified laboratory can help choose bacteria and other contaminant tests from your well history and local guidance. A hardness test or pH reading alone is not a complete drinking-water safety assessment.
What maintenance do a neutralizer and softener need?
Neutralizer media is consumed and needs inspection and replenishment as specified for the unit. Check softener salt, regeneration and treated-water hardness. The sediment cartridge, UV lamp and quartz sleeve have separate care requirements. Follow the equipment manuals and use follow-up water results to confirm performance rather than assuming the same refill interval fits every home.
