A pattern matters more than one symptom
Warning Signs of a Hidden Water-Line Leak
Hidden water leak detection starts with what changed and when. One sign can have another cause, so several observations matter.
- Unexplained meter movement: Movement while fixtures and appliances are off can indicate flow, but the source still needs isolation.
- High water bill: If the water bill is suddenly high with no visible leak, compare recent use and meter activity.
- Stained ceiling or wall: Discoloration can come from a supply line, drain, roof, or condensation; timing helps narrow it.
- Low pressure: A change may involve a leak, valve, fixture, utility condition, or restriction. Note whether one fixture or the whole home is affected.
- Sound of running water: Flow heard with fixtures off deserves investigation, especially with meter movement or moisture.
- Damp slab or floor: Warm, damp, or discolored flooring can support concern, but it cannot confirm a pipe location.
