Independent Water Diagnosis Before a Sales Recommendation

The water-quality service guide helps choose a path. This page measures the concern; test-first treatment design interprets the evidence, and filtration and softener service handles equipment after the need is established.

We begin with the source, symptom, sample point, equipment, and decision. A home water test before a softener differs from a bacteria or PFAS question. Water testing and treatment are in scope; drain-cleaning, sewer-main, septic, sump-pump, and well-pump work are not.

What the Water-Test Numbers Can Tell You

Hardness. Hardness is reported in grains per gallon (gpg). USGS guidance checked August 2026 classifies about 7 gpg, or 121 mg/L, as hard. It may support treatment when scale or soap performance matters; it does not require a softener.

Iron and manganese. EPA secondary guidance, checked May 2026, links 0.3 mg/L iron and 0.05 mg/L manganese with reddish-orange or black-brown staining. These aesthetic points are not health or equipment thresholds.

pH and corrosion. EPA’s secondary range, checked May 2026, is 6.5–8.5. Low pH may contribute to corrosion and pinhole leaks without proving the cause. Our pipe-leak diagnosis and repair service evaluates visible damage.

Bacteria. Well-safety decisions require properly collected laboratory samples for total coliform and any directed E. coli follow-up. Clear water or a home strip cannot establish safety.

PFAS. Field meters do not measure PFAS. A MassDEP-certified laboratory using an applicable EPA method supplies the quantitative result for treatment or compliance-grade decisions.

Field Testing vs. Certified Laboratory Analysis

Field screening can measure hardness, pH, chlorine, iron, TDS, temperature, and visible sediment or turbidity when the instrument fits. Chlorine adds municipal-water taste or odor context; sediment can point toward source, plumbing, or pretreatment questions. Neither identifies every contaminant.

Bacteria, PFAS, and other health-related questions go to an appropriate certified laboratory. Analytes, bottle, sample point, collection, preservation, holding time, and chain of custody affect whether a report supports a property or treatment decision. Field screening is never represented as a laboratory result.

Test when a result will change a household or property decision. Prior reports are history; a current concern needs a property-specific sample.

Before buying a well-served home, establish a raw-water baseline and review existing treatment.

How much does a PFAS water test cost, and how does testing work?

Laboratories set PFAS prices from the method, analytes, samples, collection, shipping, and turnaround, so no universal price applies. Field instruments do not measure PFAS. A MassDEP-certified laboratory supplies handling instructions, uses an applicable EPA method, and issues the quantitative result.

How do I get my well water tested in Massachusetts, and how often should I test?

Choose a MassDEP-certified laboratory, follow its collection instructions, and check Board of Health rules.
