Carbon comes as whole-house tanks and point-of-use cartridges, and every carbon media has a rated capacity that runs out whether or not the water tastes different.
Reverse Osmosis (RO)
An RO system pushes water through a semipermeable membrane, sending treated water to a small storage tank for the kitchen tap and a concentrate stream to the drain. It is typically a point-of-use choice for drinking and cooking water rather than a whole-house approach. Performance depends on pressure, temperature, membrane condition, prefilters, and maintenance.
Oxidation and Filtration
For confirmed iron, manganese, or sulfur-odor concerns, oxidation converts dissolved metals into particles a media bed can catch, and the bed backwashes the load to a drain. Media selection depends on the laboratory results, pH, flow rate, and the backwash capacity of the home’s plumbing. Ultraviolet (UV) Disinfection

Every technology above has a service life, and the schedules differ. A cartridge left past its rated capacity is not neutral — it can stop delivering the treatment it was selected for while the water still looks and tastes fine.
